HW- Legacy of the French Revolution

At its core, the French Revolution was a political movement devoted to liberty. But what that liberty actually was and what was required to realize it remained open questions during the Revolution, as they have ever since. Some historians have suggested that what the revolutionaries’ liberty meant in practice was violence and a loss of personal security that pointed to the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. This negative view had its roots in the ideas of many counter-revolutionaries, who criticized the Revolution from its beginning. These ideas gained new popularity during the period of reaction that set in after Napoleon’s final defeat in 1815, when the monarchy and its counter-revolutionary allies were restored to power.

However, the majority of Europeans and non-Europeans came to see the Revolution as much more than a bloody tragedy. These people were more impressed by what the Revolution accomplished than by what it failed to do. They recalled the Revolution’s abolition of serfdom, slavery, inherited privilege, and judicial torture; its experiments with democracy; and its opening of opportunities to those who, for reasons of social status or religion, had been traditionally excluded.

One of the most important contributions of the French Revolution was to make revolution part of the world’s political tradition. The French Revolution continued to provide instruction for revolutionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries, as peoples in Europe and around the world sought to realize their different versions of freedom. Karl Marx would, at least at the outset, pattern his notion of a proletarian revolution on the French Revolution of 1789. And 200 years later Chinese students, who weeks before had fought their government in Tiananmen Square, confirmed the contemporary relevance of the French Revolution when they led the revolutionary bicentennial parade in Paris on July 14, 1989.

Along with offering lessons about liberty and democracy, the Revolution also promoted nationalism. Napoleon’s occupation provoked nationalist groups to organize in Italy and Germany. Also influential was the revolutionaries’ belief that a nation was not a group of royal subjects but a society of equal citizens. The fact that most European countries are or are becoming parliamentary democracies, along the lines set out by the French Revolution, suggests its enduring influence.

Socially, the Revolution was also important. Clearly, society in France and to a lesser extent in other parts of Europe would never be the same. Once the ancient structure of privilege was smashed, it could not be pieced together again. The Revolution did not fundamentally alter the distribution of wealth, but that had not been the intention of most of the revolutionaries. Insofar as legal equality gradually became the norm in France and Europe, the revolutionaries succeeded.

The cultural impact is harder to assess. The Revolution did not succeed in establishing the national school system it envisioned, but it did found some of France’s elite educational institutions that have produced some of that nation’s greatest leaders. Its attack on the church had profound repercussions, making the status of the church a central political issue, which even today divides France politically and culturally.

As for economic development, the Revolution probably hurt more than it helped. In the long term, the liberation of the economy from royal controls, the standardization of weights and measures, and the development of a uniform civil law code helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution. But the disruptive effects of war on the French economy offset the positive effects of these changes. In terms of total output, the economy was probably set back a generation.

Which effects of the French Revolution do you think are the most influential to our world? Explain.

Your response must be at least 2 paragraphs.

  1. The French Revolution contributed a lot to the world as we know it today, but personally, I think the most influential effect was the belief that a nation is not a group of royal subjects but instead a society of equal citizens. I think this is the most important because not only does it involve more freedom, but leads to democracy and better treatment. Now that people are looked at as citizens, they get more of a say.
We can now choose our leaders and our government. We all have the same opportunities as any one else. You don't have to be born into a family with a high position, or that owns land, in order to be wealthy or live a nice life. You are able to work for what you want whether is money or houses or whatever makes you happy. This is all due to the freedom of being equal citizens. This is why I think that is the biggest most important influence of the French Revolution. -A.S

  2. The french revolution has shaped our world the way it is today. With the ideas of revolution, freedom and independence in mind, the french revolution was just a successful example of what a true revolution was. Other neighboring countries began to be influenced by the actions of France. From there on out, the spirit of nationalism was emphasized in many countries. Other countries that followed in the wave of reactionary revolutions include Austria and Poland, both of which removed their monarchies and remain constitutional to this day. Ultimately meaning, it influenced other revolutions in countries around the world.
Another huge impact that influenced our world was the development of a constitutional government which remains to this date. Well, what exactly is a constitutional government? It's laws that are set by people that have made and agreed upon for government. The french revolution had a great impact on this because they advanced from an absolute monarchy, to a constitutional monarchy, and finally, a complete constitutional government. The third estate provided the perfect example that appealed to people, basically saying that if they could win against this war, who couldn't?

  3. One effect I believe the French Revolution had that made it influential in our world was that it made a majority of Europeans and non- Europeans impressed by what it accomplished, rather than what it could not failed in. It made many people believed that it was more than just a tragic event. One of the most important contributions of the French Revolution was to make revolution part of the world’s political tradition. The revolution offered lessons about liberty and democracy as well as also becoming socially important, but as for economic development… it pretty much made things worse than better.
The French Revolution promoted nationalism, but Napoleon’s occupation provoked nationalists groups to organize in Italy and Germany. The revolutionaries believed that a nation was a society of equal citizens and not a group of royal subjects. Since at the time most European countries were or were becoming parliamentary democracies it is suggested that the revolution was enduring its influence.

  4. The effects of the French Revolution I think are the most influential to our world is the obtaining of freedom. The main reason of a revolution itself is to have the people improve the country and free themselves from their unfair burdens. The French Revolution did that, and acted as a good example for others to do the same. Leaders knew the famous revolution and it's success, so they decided that it would also be possible to obtain their freedom if the French can do it. The events also equalized and brought together the people, giving a sense of unity and pride of their nationality, making the country a better place. As for social improvements, the French Revolution did influence that as well. For the distribution of wealth and land, France altered it into a more agreeable form, making the citizens happier later on. As these improvements took toll, the economy improved as well. As for most Revolutions, money was always a problem- even after the revolution. However, when people grow comfortable with their money, they spend it- giving it a plus for the government's future funding. Thus, the French Revolution being everything above, it was indeed a good influence to the world.

  5. In my opinion, the most influential effect of the French Revolution is that to make revolution part of the world’s political tradition. Here is the reason for it.
It gave people a pattern of revolution, a great example to show how the common citizens change their country. Although it was full of violence and blood, it’s still effective. Just like the example in the paragraph. In 1989, Chinese students fought the government in the Tiananmen Square, used the power of citizens and knowledge, they wanted to change the status of government in their country. Just like the French Revolution, but without the violence and at the end of the small revolution, the students lost. Not only in 1989 of China, but also in 1917 of Russia, the October Revolution. Lenin and Trotsky led the an armed insurrection in Saint Petersburg, overthrew the Russian Government, it’s also an effective example of revolution.
So that, I think that’s the reason why I thought it’s effective.

I think the most influential effect during the French Revolution to our world was the fact that people were allowed to vote. When people gotten the privileage to vote, they were confident that, the King that they have chosen is efficient enough to be king. The people also had the right to establish a constitution that had a statement of laws. the constitution gave them the ability to actually live in a more stable society. The constituition gave the people the right to make a voice and to say something about their own society.

The constitution mostly influenced our world and revolutionized it in a special way. The constitution gave us the idea to make the 27 amendments. When we made this, it always kept an organized society especially during the roaring 20's when there were smugglers and speak eases. The amendments were also made to ban certain alcohol from entering the United States, because of certain accidents made. The constitution during the French Revolution really made a dramatic change to our world today.

  8. I think democracy was the most influential that the French Revolution brought to our world. Democracy is when the people rule. We people now have the right to kick someone out of office. Everyone is equal in a democratic country. So that means there won't be a king or a dictator.
Most country is democratic. People prefer not being ruled and have the right to speck about their opinion. The USA is democratic so we have a government which take votes from the citizen. It is more fair if we take a vote on what our country will be in the future instead of having one person calling all the shots.

  9. I think that the French Revolution has influenced the world in many ways. One way the French Revolution influenced the world is that it set down instruction for other revolutions. During the 19th and 20th centuries, people started to create their own image of freedom. The French Revolution led as an example for other countries to have their own revolutions. Karl Marx, and Chinese students confirm being inspired by the French Revolution during the bicentennial parade in Paris.

Another way the French Revolution influenced the world was nationalism. The revolution showed that people of France believe that they were not ruled by royal subjects, but the were all equal within the society. Many European countries today are democracies, or becoming one. This shows how the French Revolution influenced the rest of the world. As you can see, the French Revolution has impacted the world in many ways, and impacted it greatly.

  10. The French Revolution changed the course of history forever. It has affected the world even today. When people think about the French Revolution they think of all the destruction and devastation, but they don’t think about the success in it. The road and journey to freedom was not going to be easy.
I believe that France not having a monarchy by the end of the Revolution was very significant. Today in the U.S, the person who runs the government is the president but the people get to elect who he is and we defiantly limit his powers. Also, the French Revolution changed social classes. Now, people cannot make the poor class suffer the most by paying most of the taxes like they did before. Something that happened so long ago still affects our world today.

  11. The Most effects of the French Revolution mostly influential to our world may be ,to make revolution part of the world’s political tradition. Also when promoted nationalism and education . The French Revolution influence our world to make the revolution part of the worlds political tradition because the people in our world know we have freedom but not full freedom to do anything . We though have freedom to speak our mind and give out our ideas or opinions to others in the world or community . There for nationalism also influenced the world because we have conflict with other countries and our own opinions about countries of what they are doing or whats going on.

Lastly , another reason why the French revolution influenced us is the Education. It influenced us by the education because education is a big thing in the world know to have a better future and work and have a job and have a career. It influenced us because in the 20th century they wanted to take away churches that were being educational about the national leaders to learn about them so the french war attack on them and wanted to ban churches . if influenced us because now in schools in the world we have social studies we learn about leaders and rulers , its all history to us now before they didn't want them to speak of them because they were in the present they were alive but now to learn about the leaders or french revolution and history they have no say . If they didn't have churches teach people thing we maybe wouldn't have education . And we would be doing other things to work and have a future.
This why the French Revolution influential to our world . - EM (period9)

  12. The effects of the French Revolution were that France was no longer had a monarchy, which was a major thing as seeing France’s History which much of it being a Medieval Royalty, but as for the world, the major change that happened was that society was accepting there were now two successful revolutions (The French Revolution and the American Revolution). Now Europe was worried about more revolutions that would might spark up within their own countries and also the French Revolution help bought in new governments systems, like democracy and socialism.

Overall, there are many ways that the French Revolution help influence and change the world as we known it today, one of the biggest influences was the creation of two new government systems, democracy and socialism which still exists today and also the fact that many people were shocked to see that France no longer had a monarchy, which was a major thing at the time seeing that France was much of a Medieval Royalty and these examples show that how the French Revolution changed the world forever and had a lasting impact.

  13. (P1) Effects of the French Revolution that are most influential to our world include their elite educational institutions and economy. During the revolution, the economy was terrible, which is also one of the reasons the revolution occurred. Foods such as bread and grain are a big part of the daily French lifestyle. As the demand for bread rose the prices did too. The French were still deep in debt from helping the Americans in the American Revolution. Knowing that they were in debt and had to money hurt the economy even more. Eventually, France had to free the economy from things. For example, royal controls, standardization of weights and measures, and a uniform civil law code. Overall, economy of this time was set back a generation.
(P2) The elite educational institutions also influenced our world by the forming a few of the nation’s greatest leaders. During the Enlightenment and French Revolution, education began to increase. Reading and writing became very popular and the demand for supplies to read were rising as well. Though the revolution was not able form a national school system they found a few institutions that were good. An example of a great leader who came out of the educational institute is Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite his small size, he attended a French military school and was given the name “Little Corporal.” Napoleon became a dictator of France and “saved” the French Revolution. He had established a national bank, got France out of bankruptcy, created schools, and won many battles for the country. Not only did he provided good his country but, made peace with other European countries and Great Britain.

  14. The French revolution effectively signaled the beginning of the end of the unfair and irrational Ancient Regime and the start of a new era which shapes our society today. From the declaration of the rights of man to the creation of the National Assembly, the revolution sparked the emergence of democracy and the need for a government to serve its people, not themselves. The era of enlightenment, end to feudalism and the emergence of some of the most influential figures of history.
It is clear that none of this would ever have occurred had it not been for the French Revolution. It exceeds all over events in history such as the Industrial Revolution, rise of Fascism in Europe and the end of the Roman Republic due to the sheer influence it has on today’s society. Had the revolution not taken place, we'd likely still be living under elements of feudal law and social inequality.

  15. The French Revolution not only influenced countries in Europe, but all over the world. One affect of the French Revolution that was the most influential was the idea of liberty. When America was fighting for independence, and the Declaration of Independence was created, it was influenced by John Locke who also had an affect on the French Revolution. His words of God-given right to “life, liberty, and property”, became not only words of the Enlightenment time period, but also words that affected two countries in an important way. The importance of individuals was noticed and people weren’t just slaves to the government, but people who should be valued no matter what social level or the amount of money they had.
Another affect of the French Revolution that was the most influential was democracy. Democracy was also something that influenced the act of voting for countries including America. The people of France wanted a say in what was happening in their country. Due to the Revolution, at one time the people of France were no longer subjects, but citizens of a nation. The fact that democracy became a norm for countries in Europe is astounding because the Revolution wasn’t a fight that the people of France thought would be influenced all around the world. Even though the French Revolution killed hundreds of thousands of people, it could’ve possibly saved others from the stone cold orders of a monarchy or a dictator.

  16. There are many social, political, and economic factors from the French Revolution that left an ever-lasting impression on our world. It has continued to send ripples through the fabric of history, to this very day, giving us guidance and instructions on what not to do. I personally believe that one of the biggest effects of the French Revolution that continues to affect today would be the establishment of The Rights of Man. While being based on our U.S Constitution, it was a bit more broad, and liberal in its rules, creating a much more populace dominated government. It is used as a basis today in many world constitutions, being borrowed from time and time again.

Another effect though, was actually a detriment to France at the time. Due to their involvement in the American Revolutionary War, they were left deeply in debt. Their own forthcoming revolution did not help matters, and in fact, greatly increased them. They were sunk so far into debt by the time that a new government was established and stabilized, they were looking for literally any way to reduce it. They turned to their once bitter enemies, England, in an attempt to forge some type of neutrality agreement, or alliance, to save their own country. Had this not happened, the event of World War One, and by continuation, Two, would have been drastically different. England may or may not have chosen to side with another country, significantly altering the outcome of said wars. -K.B

  17. In my personal option, the revolution is the example that set to the rest of Europeans , of democratic government, and people deserve rights and everyone should be equal, the kings should not be above the law, and the kings should not have absolute power.
What French revolution have effected us is that French revolution have set a example to the rest of the Europeans of what absolute monarch could turn into and the citizens are the same as the kings, they should have more rights and kings should not be above the law; when a country's future is decided by a single man, it is not going to work "power corrupts, absolute power corrupt absolutely, absolute great man are almost always bad men" by John Dalberg

  18. I feel that one of the most influential events that had been affected by the French revolution that has impacted our world today would be the whole revolution itself, honestly. This is because the revolution itself has influenced the rest of the world because of how so many people had came together to try to overthrow the government and succeeded in the process. As well as the revolution, the amount of deaths that came along with it was indeed frightening as well. This could have ignited fright to the other people of the world that surround France as well as the other distant countries. This could’ve also ignited courage to stand up to their government as well because they simply didn’t like how it was because of how the people in France were able to overthrow their own government.

Another way the French Revolution could have possibly influenced our world could have been how the government ruled their people. They probably had felt the need to respect their people more and treat them with royalty. This is for the prevention of their people ever going against them. This taught the other countries in the world how to never take their people for granted or there will be consequences where their people scheme behind their backs.

  19. Although the French Revolution was a bloody tragedy it had many positive influenced all over the world. They showed the world was liberty really was and gave many different revolutionary ideas to other countries. The French Revolution had many accomplishments that Europeans and many Non-Europeans acknowledged. The French Revolution got rid of slavery, judicial torture, and many other unconstitutional acts. I think the most important influence the French Revolution had was to make revolution part of the world’s political tradition.
The French Revolution helped places all around the world especially Europe make revolutions. People all over the world made their different variations influenced from the French Revolution. I think the revolution had the most influence because of the way it influenced the whole world. Even kids from China fought their government in Tiananmen Square and they even led a parade in Paris. The idea of a proletarian revolution made other countries and people think of their own version of liberty.

  20. Many things have been changed during the French Revolution and many of them were very influential. The reason for this is because the French Revolution helped make change and made people think for themselves and question more. Some of the rights included have been used in some very important documents.

The effects that I think are the most influential to our world was the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. The reason for that is because of it's many rights that were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence. One of the important right that was used in the Declaration of Independence is the right to be innocent until proven guilty in court. This allows each and every man the ability to be trialed and be judged fairly in court. Although the Revolution lead to famine, the death of thousands, etc in France, it was an important time period in history. It lead to the death of King Louie, the creation of the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen, the Reign of Terror, and much more. This is one of the most influential effect of the French Revolution to our world in my opinion.

  21. There were many ways the French Revolution has influenced the world, One was a rebellion in China, the influences and the thoughts of a new government has traveled around the world and hit China. The Chinese people before the Revolution were blinded and was thought the mandate of heaven was the purpose of why things were the way right now.
The Chinese citizens gathered around Tiananmen Square for a peaceful rebellion and rally. The Chinese government asked the citizens to please move and go home peacefully. But they still stood there just idol. Then on a dramatic second, a gun was fired and it became chaos, the government military open fired and slaughtered thousands of protesters and told everyone that if anyone mentions what happened would be executed. -R.J

I think the most influential effect that French Revolution brought to our world is political concept. The French Revolution was the first time the commons population revolted against Monarchy and established a new republic government system in French. The U.S. Constitution was draw from some parts of French Constitution.
The main point that French Revolution had brought is the idea of freedom. People in the whole world began to realize their different versions of freedom after the French Revolution. The kings and nobles of 18th century in Europe were faced with overthrow and murder. France grew stronger and faster under it's succesive republics because the freedoms evident in a republic encourage investment in new technology and excite compeition, and therefore innovation.

  23. The French Revolution was one of the most influential and significant events in our history. To some it was a great tragedy, but to others they saw it as a great accomplishment. It had many effects that became influential to our world. One if the contributions of the revolution was to make revolution part of the world's political tradition. This means that people should fight for their rights and liberty. One effect was nationalism which the revolution supported. The belief was for a nation to be thought as a group of equal citizens that had freedom. Also, the revolution sparked the government to serve its people and not themselves. 24. there are many ways the french revolution has influenced our world today. first off i think it sparked many other revolutions in the world like the american revolution. like the french revolution, the american revolution also had occurred to break away from a higher power. even today you will notice revolutions as peoples from different countries fighting for there freedoms against there government. because of the french revolution people around the world were provided with instruction on how to go about their own revolt.
along with setting up building blocks for other revolts the french revoltion also promoted democracy. many countries now are democratic. the ideas that the french had of democracy were well liked and adopted by many. however there are still countries that aren't democratic. but countries like america help try to change that status. as you can see the french revolution had a huge impact on the world.

  25. The most influential effects of the French Revolution is freedom. The French Revolution was based off of inequality in the government. The First Estate that was the Roman Catholic Clergy and made up 1% of the population and didn't have to pay taxes while, Sans Culottes, peasants paid very heavy taxes and 10% of what they made went to the Church.
The French Revolution helped spread the word of equality amongst the people. People fought to have the same rights as one another. The Declaration of the Rights of Man showed that all men were created equal. Events that took place in the French Revolution brought people together under one nation and brought unity to their country. Social issues were improved and so was the economy. T.Y.

  26. There are many ways the french revolution has influenced our world today. One of them is that the belief that a government is not a categorized of royal subjects but instead a it is a society of equal citizens. The reason why think this one of the most influenced idea because now everyone has equal rights to share their opinion. They are not going to be looked at like a 3rd estate. Now they have the right to choose democracy and also they have the rights to accept or deny the laws. Citizens could choose their own government. They do not have to be born in a royal family to rule the country. All citizens have the same opportunities.
The another most influential effect of the French Revolution was the shift from Absolute Monarchy to Republicanism. This not only reduced the power of a single individual but transferred the power to the citizens. France was the largest European nation to convert to Republicanism at the time.

  28. I believe that the legacy that the
French Revolution left behind was the
Declaration of the Rights of Man and
the Citizen. Some people argue that it
was the rights, but I believe that the
Declaration of the Rights of Man and
the Citizen was what documented the
rights. If no one documented the
rights, who would remember the exact
    rights? Without documentation,
history is like the game, "Telephone."
People would pass the stories down
to the next generation, but who would
    know and remember exactly what
    happened? They would have many
    rights, but without the Declaration,
they might not remember which ones
    came from the Revolution.

Revolution put an end to the
Monarchy and gave power to the
people. It also said all men are
created equal and have freedom of
speech, the press, and of religion. The
Declaration of the Rights of Man and
the Citizen was the most important
legacy because it was one of the
things that moved the fight for
    democracy along. People then might
not have known that democracy was
what they wanted at the time, but they
wanted to be included in the decisions
for their country, and that's essentially
    what democracy is.
