HW- The Ideology of Aryanism

Who were the Aryans? Hitler's Persistent Mythology

One of the most interesting puzzles in archaeology, and one that hasn't been completely solved yet, concerns the story of the supposed Aryan invasion of the Indian subcontinent. The story goes like this: The Aryans were a tribe of Indo-European-speaking, horse-riding nomads living in the arid steppes of Eurasia. Sometime around 1700 BC, the Aryans invaded the ancient urban civilizations of the Indus Valley, and destroyed that culture. The Indus Valley civilizations were far more civilized than any horse-back nomad, having had a written language, farming capabilities, and led a truly urban existence. Some 1,200 years after the supposed invasion, the descendants of the Aryans, so they say, wrote the classic Indian literature called the Vedic manuscripts.

Adolf Hitler and the Aryan/Dravidian Myth

Adolf Hitler twisted the theories of Gustaf Kossinna (1858-1931), to put forward the Aryans as a master race of Indo-Europeans, who were supposed to be Nordic in appearance and directly ancestral to the Germans. These Nordic invaders were defined as directly opposite to native south Asian peoples, called Dravidians, who were supposed to have been darker-skinned.

The problem is, most if not all of this story--"Aryans" as a cultural group, invasion from the arid steppes, Nordic appearance, the Indus Civilization being destroyed, and, certainly not least, the Germans being descended from them--may not be true at all.

Flawed Arguments and Recent Investigations

It turns out that there are serious problems with this argument. There are no references to an invasion in the Vedic manuscripts; and the Sanskrit word "Aryas" means "noble", not a superior cultural group. Secondly, recent archaeological evidence suggests that the Indus civilization was shut down by droughts combined with a devasting flood, not a violent confrontation. Recent archaeological evidence also shows that many of the so-called "Indus River" valley peoples lived in the Sarasvati River, which is mentioned in the Vedic manuscripts as a homeland. There is no biological or archaeological evidence of a massive invasion of people of a different race.

The most recent studies concerning the Aryan/Dravidian myth include language studies, which have attempted to decipher and thereby discover the origins of the Indus script, and the Vedic manuscripts, to determine the origins of the Sanskrit in which it was written. Excavations at the site of Gola Dhoro in Gujarat suggest the site was abandoned quite suddenly, although why that may occurred is yet to be determined.

Racism and Science

Born from a colonial mentality, corrupted by a Nazi propaganda machine, the Aryan invasion theory is finally undergoing radical reassessment by south Asian archaeologists and their colleagues, using the Vedic documents themselves, additional linguistic studies, and physical evidence revealed through archaeological excavations. The Indus valley cultural history is an ancient and complex one. Only time will teach us what role if any an Indo-European invasion took in the history; but it seems clear that a collapse of the Indus civilization did not occur.

Extra info:

"German nationalism turned this word into a noun, "Aryan," and capitalized it to refer to an imagined race of people that were the original Sanskrit speakers who had composed its great texts. Early romantic claims that Indians were the ancestors of the Europeans were gradually replaced by the new myth that a race called "Indo-Aryans" was the common ancestors to both. Their origin was thought to be in the Caucasus Mountains, hence the term "Caucasian." Later, the "Indo" was dropped and the white Aryan Race Theory emerged. Thus, from the European desire to be seen as the inheritors of the Sanskrit civilization, the notion of a European super-race was born, with Germany as its highest manifestation.

How did this come about? In the late 1700s, European identity was shaken when scholars discovered that Sanskrit was closely related to the European languages, though much older and more sophisticated. At first, this discovery fed European Romantic imagination, in which India was glorified as the perfect past. Herder, a German Romanticist, saw Europe's "discovery" of India as a "re-discovery" of its own foundation. India was viewed as Europe's mother civilization by Frederick Schlegel in Germany and by Voltaire in France. William Jones, a British colonial administrator, considered Sanskrit the most marvelous product of the human mind. Sanskrit and Indology entered most major European universities between 1800 and 1850, challenging if not replacing Latin and Greek texts as a source for "new" ideas. Many new disciplines were shaped by the ensuing intellectual activity, including linguistics, comparative religion, modern philosophy and sociology".

2. How were Hitler's theories of a "master race" completely flawed and inaccurate?

  2. 1. How did Hitler use "science" to justify his racist theories? The theory of evolution on the other hand opens the door to racism all the time
The theory of evolution on the other hand opens the door to racism all the time. For example, Adolf Hitler used the theory to justify his killing of jews. White supremacists use it to say white people evolved from black people, which is true if you believe we all came from Africa.

    2. How were Hitler's theories of a "master race" completely flawed and inaccurate? 3. 1. Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories because science was considered a smart, logical subject that not many of the poor were educated about that time. Hearing Hitler speak with logical reason, more people believed in him. He twisted his words more into lies by making his own theories. Gustaf Kossina, an acclaimed professor of archeology, theorized with the origins of the Germans. To influence the people, Hitler gave them a greater, but more negative feel with their nationalism with the Aryan race.

    2. Hitler's theories of a "master race" were completely flawed and inaccurate, but still made people believe in him. Saying the Aryans were the master race of Indo-Europeans, he also added that Germans were directly related to these Nordics. However, this was all wrong. The manuscripts were wrong about the invasions, how the Indus civilization died was by droughts and natural disasters, not by violent confrontations. As another flaw, there was no biological evidence of the confrontation near the Sarasvati River where these Aryan's resided.

  4. 1. Hitler used “science” to justify his racist theories by using South Asian archaeologist to reassess the Aryan invasion. Additionally they using the Vedic documents, linguistic studies, and physical evidence. Since the Indus valley is a very complex part of history, archaeologist were unable to identify all the facts at the time. However, they did conclude that the Indus civilization did not collapse.
    2. Hitler's theories of a “master race” were completely flawed and inaccurate because there wasn’t any proof to what had originally happened. No references to an invasion and no physical evidence stating the Indus when down due to floods/droughts. The Indus supposedly lived on the Sarasvati River which is their homeland. Again, no evidence of an invasion of a different race was found as well.

  5. Hitler used science to explain his racism. What Hitler did is that he tweaked the stories of Gustaff Kosina. In Hitler’s mind, the Aryans were the master race of the Indo Europeans, and were directly ancestral to the Germans. The Nordic Invaders were supposedly dark skinned, and were called the Dravidians.

Hitler had theories about a master race. However, his theories are completely flawed and inaccurate. There are no records of invasion in the Verdic manscripts. Also, the word “Aryas” means “noble,”whereas Hitler translated it to “superior culture group. There is no archaeologic or bioloogic evidence supporting the idea of an invasion by a different race.

  6. 1. Hitler use "science" to justify his racist theories by saying that Indo-Europeans, who should be Nordic in manifestation and straightforwardly familial to the Germans. These Nordic intruders were characterized as specifically inverse to local south Asian people groups, called Dravidians, who should have been darker-cleaned.

    2. Hitler's theories of a "master race" completely flawed and inaccurate because studies showed that there are no evidence to an intrusion in the Vedic compositions; and the Sanskrit word "Aryas" implies "respectable", not a prevalent social gathering. Later archaeological confirmation likewise demonstrates that a considerable lot of the alleged "Indus River" valley people groups existed in the Sarasvati River, which is said in the Vedic original copies as a country. There is no archaeological proof of a gigantic attack of another race.

  7. Hitler use science to justify his racist theories by talking about the Indus Valley civilization and if it collapsed. He compares the Nazi propaganda machine to the Aryan invasion theory. He is is trying to justify that if the Indus Valley civilization didn't collapse that his racist theories against the Jews won't effect the German society negatively. Hitler is basically making excuses for all the wrongs he did.
Indus Valley civilization was a strong civilization. There were invasion attempts on their civilization but they still resist. Hitler wants to kill a lot of people. He looks back in history and makes justifications based on the it's bad in order to get away with things. Hitler wants to look good for his wrongs so that no one gets in his way.

  8. Hitler's theories of a " master race" is completely flawed and and inaccurate because he does a lot of wrongs to his people even though he is patriotic about Germany. One of the Nazis's points is to not threatened any religion in Germany. One of the 25 points says that German people should not be offended of anything. Then another of the nazi's 25 quotes it says that no Jew can be considered a German.
Hitler ideas is full of confusion and evil. He literally goes against his words more than once. So Hitler's theories of a master race doesn't make any sense because he wants Germany to unify and conquer the world, but then he commits genocide on his own people. Hitler wants opposite goals that can't be achieve at the same time because if you want peace in your nation you can't terrorize people in your just because of their culture.

  9. Hitler uses science to justify his racist theories by doing things similar to the Aryans. He was able to twisting the theories of Gustaf Kossinna. That was putting forward the Aryans as a master race or in Hitler's case, the Germans; and that would make them look stronger. Another why he could have justified it was because he believed that the Nordic invaders were supposedly ancestrally related to Germans. Hitler must have believed that he could do what the invaders did and invade and conquer other lands.

Hitler's theories of a master race were completely flawed and inaccurate because there were no references of the thing he mentioned in the Vedic manuscripts. Another way it was flawed and inaccurate was proved by recent archaeological evidence. The evidence suggested that the Indus civilization was shut down by droughts and not by war. Also, it showed that the people lived in the Sarasvati River which is mentioned as a homeland in the manuscript. There was no biological or archaeological evidence of a invasion of people of a different race.

  10. 1. Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories because he claimed that the Aryans whom conquered India were Nordic. Thus, during his reign, he had a basis on this. He used face structures, cheekbone, hair color, etc (physical features) that all Aryan germans should have ideally. To him, anyone who did not fit these measurements were not considered Aryan and were considered as outcasts.
    2. His theories were completely flawed and inaccurate because as stated above, there are no references to an invasion in the Vedic manuscripts, meaning that there is no biological or archaeological evidence of a massive invasion of people of a different race. In addition, Hiter's "master race" did not comply with the laws of science, such as inheritance and genetics. As compared to Hitler, ironically, he himself did not have "blond hair" or "blue eyes." The irony shows that his judgement/theories were flawed and inaccurate.

  11. 1) Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories. For example, the text says "There are no references to an invasion in the Vedic manuscripts." Vedic manuscripts were referred to earlier texts found in India. Hitler concluded that "excavations at the site of Gola Dhoro in Gujarat were abandoned" but the reason why it may have occurred is still being questioned.
    2) Hitler's theories of a master race" were completely inaccurate because researchers have found body remains. South Asian archaeologists used the Vedic documents themselves to do additional studies on this theory and evidence revealed through archaeological excavations.Hitler's "master race" wasn't completely flawed after all.
