"Of all the men we meet with, nine parts of ten are what they are, good or evil useful or not, by their education. Tis this that makes the great difference in mankind." - John Locke
ReplyDeleteI think here John Locke tries to stress his view on education. Its not just simply learning and understanding better, but shaping you into and adult. It molds you into who you are no matter your natural inclinations. Whether or not it shapes you for the better or the worst, its all due to an education. It leads you to the principles you'll follow when your older.
I agree with Locke here because you learn so much in school from such a young age. It molded us so much already just from pre school. When your so naïve and you learn, these new concepts make you have different outlooks depending on how you perceive them, and it does have a big part on your personality. Education is where opinions start, and get people thinking differently. -A.S
"Idea is the object of thinking" is a quote stated directly from John Locke. He is basically "questioning" us on the origins of ideas. From the quote, he is saying that ideas are innate to us, meaning they are natural to us. So where do our ideas really come from? I believe that from this thesis, he means that human knowledge is based entirely on experience of the world.
ReplyDeleteFor example, (if we didn't know that stoves were hot) we touch the stove and feel the sensation. Next time, you'd know not to touch the stove again. Or another instance where you trip over the sidewalk curb. The next time you walk past this curb, you will be aware of this and be careful. Ultimately, Locke is suggesting that our ideas come from observations and experience of other people.
- J.L
In the quotes from John Locke Idea is the object of thinking, it means that idea came from thinking. People think about their experience and how it can help society. For example someone invented the cellular phone to make communicating easier, invention of emailing to send a mail quicker. Another idea is making a central government, since people aren't not behaving good someone need to step in and help people get together as one. All these idea came from people minds and their experiences.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote. The reason why I agree with this quote is because without people thinking there won’t be any ideas and with no ideas flowing around we won’t have anything that will help our lives. Idea helps our lives easier. Right now we have a lot of technology that helps housework, emailing, communicating, traveling and we have medicine to keep us healthy easier. Without these ideas we won’t be able to live long.

"New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common." - John Locke
ReplyDeleteThis is basically completely true. New opinions are almost universally unpopular, and very much hated within the world. It may take many years, even possibly a generation or two, for a new opinion to truly find the ground it needs to become common. For example, it was once of opinion that people of African decent were property, and did not have natural rights as humans. For nearly 300 years, they were caught, and sold into slavery, often dying, or being put through extreme physical torture. Why? Because they were just property. But, in 1864, at least in America, that ended with the Emancipation Proclamation.
Now, why do I agree with this? Because it's easy to see, even today. Many people believe Obama, or, even though as it is yet to happen, a woman, will make absolutely terrible presidents. Even though both groups have come so far, in terms of securing rights, people still hold very low opinions of them. It can be held true for popular media, political offices, and even every day things. -KB
The quote: "Parents wonder why the streams are bitter, when they themselves have poisoned the fountain." was written by John Locke. This quote is agreeable to me due to all parents having the responsibility of influencing their children’s important decisions and manner in life. Raising a child well can be hard for all; including John Locke’s time, and many have complications. Certain examples today are teens who drop out of high school permanently, children with a sour behavior, and some who commit crimes daily.
ReplyDeleteCertain parents with this situation would often wonder why their children are what they are today, although it is not only the child who doesn’t recognize the importance of doing well in life, but the parents as well. They do not understand that it is their actions that influence them, as well as the words and advice they give them, thus, clearing meaning to ‘when they themselves have poisoned the fountain’ in Locke’s quote. Overall, what Locke suggests is to be a good role model and encourage your kids to be the same when they grow up, otherwise your future will be as poisonous as his quote describes.

Philosopher: John Locke
ReplyDeleteQuote: "No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience."
I agree with the this quote because not everyone can understand how something is unless they experience it for themselves. We all hear or read stories about others' recent experiences or tragedies. From what they are telling us, we are in a way going through it from their perspective. However, we won't feel the emotion or have the knowledge of what occurred because we hadn't encountered it personally. An example using this quote can come from John Locke himself.
As a philosopher, Locke must have gone through many experiences that lead him to gain the knowledge to become who he was. During his medical studies, Locke also experienced business and political matters. His political thoughts provided him with the knowledge on the structure of the government and eventually formed his philosophy, "Men are all free people but must compromise some of their beliefs in the interest of forming a government for the people." He continued writing and composed famous writings such as the Two Treatises of Government and "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding."

“Education begins the gentleman, but reading, good company and reflection must finish him.” – John Locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with what John Locke says about how getting an education can help gain a people more knowledge in life but reading and reflecting on them must be finished in order to become a very successful person in life and also he says that we must incorporate our own personal views into our minds. In order to truly work hard we must reflect on our meaningful events in our lives to influence our own thinking in order to become a great and smart people.
Overall, what he is trying to say is that in order to have great knowledge we must try to get our own personal views into our minds. We humans must try to work hard and reflect on the important events that occurred in our lives and also try to become a great person with great knowledge and reflect on our daily lives everyday in order to become very successful.

“Men being, as has been said, by nature, all free, equal, and independent, no one can be put out of this estate, and subjected to the political power of another, without his own consent.”
ReplyDeleteLocke, John. The Second Treatise of Civil Government. 1690.
I agree with this quote because it is true that it is mostly said by all that every person is free, equal and independent in their own way. Although this saying may be used frequently through time, why is it that we must follow the rules of another other than ourselves? If it is said by nature that everyone is equal and independent, why shouldn’t we proceed to be equal and independent? Making these people follow the rules of another without any agreement of the person doesn’t make them equal OR independent at all. I feel that that’s just unfair and unjust. Everyone should have a saying in what they should want because it’s their life, something that shouldn’t be controlled by someone else. Since the political power includes the ruling of a whole country, I think it’s pretty selfish for this group of people to have the power of the huge amount of people that the country contains, especially without their agreement or word on it.
It isn’t freedom if you are following the rules made by another for everyone to follow. Although these higher people ruling with political power has the higher rule and education that favors their ruling, them alone ruling is very unfair and biased. That’s just my opinion but really; since all the people ruling have nothing to worry about financially, they tend to just send out laws and unjust rules that mostly affect the lower parties whereas they have no loss. They’re rates of taxes are much lower than the ones without any money. Why are these people that are in power the ones that only listen to their opinions and thoughts? Just because they may have the upper hand on knowledge and logic, it doesn’t mean that they can ignore the ones who don’t. A country wouldn’t be a country if the people weren’t involved in it.

"New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common."- John Locke
ReplyDeleteI think this quote is very true. In my opinion john locke is trying to say is that a new idea is usually looked down upon because it was previously unheard of. i agree with this quote because if you look back in history you will see that plenty of people that had an opinion other than the norm was frown upon. One example of that you can say would be Martin Luther King jr. He believed that all men should be treated equally. as a result he was beat up, talked bad about, and imprisoned for standing up for what he believed in. although the ultimate result was racial freedom it took awhile for people to accept his ideas.
more recently you can say that gays were also looked down upon for liking the same sex. 30 yrs ago being gay was unheard of. but it has been more and more common as time has gone on. And not until recently has it become widely accepted in American society. we now have states legalizing same sex marriage, celebrities you have become openly gay, and it is usually no long become a thing that is looked at as weird.
so yes i agree with john locke's statement of:"New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common. because some times it takes awhile for a new idea to become widely accepted.

I chose John Locke's quote. Which is :
ReplyDelete"when there is no law there is no freedom. Freedom of men under government is to have a standing rule to live by, common to everyone of that society and made by the legislative powered vested in it and not to be the subject to the inconstant, uncertain arbitrary will of another man."
I think the meaning of this quote is that total freedom is impossible because when there are no laws people are insecure and afraid as there are no boundaries and no protection. In order to have freedom we have to be subject to law, so we have the freedom to adhere to or reject that law, and those that adhere to it are protected from those that do not. For example, in school most of the kids disliked the rules and regulations and those teachers who are strict, but when we get a teacher who cannot control the class, then we were like to get hurt by others, so it is better to have a strict teacher.
I agree with him because he said there should be some laws. Without laws your life would be in danger. If there's laws then people would be less stressful than before. The reason is that they know that they are protected. People who will agree with the rules and regulations they will most likely get protection. I also agree with the fact that if there is laws then there will be freedom! If you have freedom then you could all decide what will be better for all of us and what will not.

ReplyDeleteBased on the Declaration of Independence, one of Washington's finest and most loved generals, Lafayette, wrote the "Declaration of the Rights of Man" upon his return to his native country, France, in the hopes of instituting a constitutional monarchy there. It advocated Liberty, Equality and Fraternity". Since it was based on our declaration, which was based on Enlightenment ides, specifically Locke, it therefore reflected Enlightenment ideas.
The Declaration of the Right of men and the citizens is a fundamental document of the French Revolution, defining the individual and collective rights of all the estates of the realm as universal. Influenced by the doctrine of natural right, the rights of man are universal, valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. Although it establishes fundamental rights for French citizens and all men without exception, it addresses neither the status of women nor slavery; despite that, it is a precursor document to international human rights instruments.

The Bible is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by God on the children of men. It has God for its author; salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture for its matter. It is all pure. john locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote because im cathelic and i belive that the bible is a book about god life. When the world was created, to this generation.it true that it has salvation for it end Because i was tought that the bible is the only way u will teach you how to be safe.
Another reason of why i agree with this quote is because the Bible is the only book written that Many people follow in any kind of church back then and know. the book teaches the people of why they should belive. like what they say ''belive and you will be saved''. After all i agree with this quote because it talking about a book of truth.

“I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.”
ReplyDelete-John Locke
John Locke is very famous for his impact on the Enlightenment. He has many inspiring quotes and my favorite quote is “I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.” In this quote I think he’s trying to say that your actions reflect your thoughts. I agree with this quote because its true that we act as how we feel.
An example is that if your parents passed away you would be crying and would look very gloomy. It shows through their actions that this person is sad. However, if you just won the lottery most people would be laughing or jumping in joy. I think this quote is very true. Most people show how they feel or their thoughts through their actions. It’s hard to hide how you feel with your acts.

“Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game.”- Voltaire
ReplyDeleteI do agree with this quote because everyone is born with different advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on how you choose to live your life. Even if you are a little better than others in a way, they can improve themselves by works and efforts they put in. In reference to what Voltaire said, even if you do get a bad deck of cards, you intelligent might win over someone with a good deck of cards but does not know how the games is played.
I believe that this quote can also mean life is unfair. Whatever life throws you, you have to except. Nothing is final and there's no destinations, it all depends on how you react to an life event that will bring you to be either a winner or a loser.

"Our incomes are like our shoes; if too small, they gall and pinch us; but if too large, they cause us to stumble and to trip." -John Locke
ReplyDeleteI believe that this quote means that when we have too little money we are forced to live extremely carefully because there isn't another way for us to live besides paycheck to paycheck. Also, I believe that by saying, "...they gall and pinch us..." John Locke means that not having enough money to be carefree angers a lot of people because they realize that there isn't much that they can do in life while still having everyday necessities.
-SRPT
I believe that when John Locke says, "...but if too large, they cause us to stumble and to trip," he means that when people have too much money, they become corrupt and act immorally. This has happened many times throughout the history of our world. It only leads to destruction whether it causes someone to be arrested, citizens to rebel and revolt against the leader in power, or it causes people to become jaded.
“What worries you, masters you.”
ReplyDeletei think this means if u stress about something alot and u just keep trying not to stress about it and complete the task ur trying to not stress about after a while u wont stress about it.Also
We have the technology to cure diseases that years ago would have killed a large portion of the population. As advanced as we humans seem to be, it is amazing at how we still allow things that have yet to happen worry us.
We allow ourselves to worry about all sorts of problems until they become our master. We play them over and over till we find a proper solution.I once heard the definition of worry as “The negative use of the imagination.” What we worry about hasn’t happened yet. So to “see” it, and worry about it, we have to imagine it.So why do we imagine the future in negative ways? That becomes worry and it will slowly destroy us.i would like to add this quote from ayn rand...It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

We are like chameleons, we take our hue and the color of our moral character, from those who are around us. - John Locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote because the people who you surround yourself with, most times, determine how you act. The people around you such as friends or family have an immense influence on you. Those people other than your conscious make up your morals. For example, when you see your older sibling always getting angry and being rude, your reaction would be that it’s okay to do the same. You wouldn’t realize that it’s wrong to let your temper get the best of you because that’s your one of the members of your family and you trust their character.
The people in your life make you who you are. It’s one of the bases of the concept of nature VS nurture. Nature is based upon the qualities that you have already inherited and nurture is based upon the traits that are made up from your environment. Nurture is relatively true because the way you’re treated and how you are raised make you what and who you are. If you surround yourself with good people who do the right thing, you’ll most likely do the same.

The Enlightenment influenced the Declaration of the Right of Man because of the philosophers that were apart of it. The articles of the Declaration of the Rights of Man are all human rights, but are also called “natural rights” as called by John Locke. John Locke believed in humans being equal and being able to have their own thoughts and speak their own mind. Many people looked him up to and people listened to what he had to say. He was influential to France and was partly the reason why they were given rights.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Enlightenment some of the philosophers pointed how much power the government had. I think the people started to believe it to and so did the government so that’s why they gave rights to the people. In the end it became fair for everyone because the Enlightenment influenced France. The articles gave people the right to speak up for themselves and not be scared to. It gave them the right to think which is exactly what the Enlightenment had them doing.

“... the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. ... The condition of man ... is a condition of war of everyone against everyone.”
ReplyDelete-Thomas Hobbes
Just by reading the first couple words of the quote, it can be told that Hobbes is not a optimistic man. He thinks that is in the human nature to look out only for yourself. Hobbes also believes in a abosulte monarchy because he believes that if people had the power, they would abuse it. He thinks that it is better if one person would make all the decisions.
In some ways I agree with this quotes and in other ways I disagree. I do agree with Hobbes when he says that people can not be trusted. Although there are some good people out there, you can not trust all. I do not agree when he says that there should be an absolute monarchy because I believe that people should have a say in what the government does. This is better then having one person thinking what they are doing is best for the people when sometimes in reality it is not.

"What worries you, masters you."
ReplyDelete-John Locke.
This quote is saying that whatever causes you concern or worries you will take over you. Maybe not literally, but Locke has a point. What worries you is something that has control of you in some way. This makes you the slave of whatever is worrying you. Whatever it may be, ithe less worries you have, the more free you will be, according to John Locke.
I definitely agree with this quote. I think that this can apply to many people and to myself as well. I as a student, I am a slave to my schoolwork. As and pianist a swimmer, i have to practice piano and labor for two hours everyday at the pool. I think that everyone have something that they are a slave to. Whether it's grade, parents, extracurricular activities, financial problems, etc, everyone is tied down in someway that worries them. And so, it masters that person. I agree with John Locke’s quote.

"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience" John Locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote completely. The reason why I agree completely is because you can't truly have the knowledge of something without experiencing it. Knowledge of something is only what people have told you or what you've read. To experience it means that you have been through it and you are now able to have a greater understanding.
In my opinion, this quote means that you cannot learn anything without prior experience. If you were learning a new subject or sport, you would need to experience it to fully comprehend it. For example, if someone tells you a certain sport is hard, you would have no idea since you haven't had any experience in that sport. Even if you have knowledge on how that sport works, you have to experience it to really know it's hard.

"Where there is no property there is no injustice." John Locke
ReplyDelete. JUSTICE? there are no absolute justice, it is all depending on the criterion of the people, when it comes toward a situation, different person have different point of view, and there for there are no absolute justice.
" where there is no property there is no injustice" have described the true humanity, truth of mankind, according to this quote and I felt absolutely agree with John Locke and felt extreme despondent. Every man is for themselves, but for what? have ever thought of why do people are advocate great power to maintain ascendency and supreme over others? it is because humans can not resist the desire for great power and ascendency over others, and when come toward the "the great powers, depravity of humanity appears because the vanity of mankind by the properties they have and to be commemorate thought out of human history.
So, is this even relating to the quote? yes, absolutely, when it comes towards vanity, people they are becoming different then before, and they fight for it, or maybe go little bit extreme, it's all because vanity/properties, (ex. when you have seen you two little brothers are fighting over a xbox 360 controller, as a third person, you the big brother could not determine who will use the controller first, because if you said:" let brother a use it first" then brother b will think it is unfair for him. And think of another situation, such as if you have a brother that have a lot of video games, and he earn it by work 5 days a week, and you have non, so you go in to your brother's room and said:" hey, brother could I borrow one of your video game?" in this case he said no, and you think it's unfair for you because he have soo, many video games, and brother think it's fine because he bought the video game with the moneys he earned from work.) see my point?

"Our incomes are like our shoes; if too small, they gall and pinch us; but if too large, they cause us to stumble and to trip.." John Locke
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with this quote because the people that don't have enough money you cant survive. Although the people with a lot of money get to kaki and loose what they have or start to change in a bad way, as a person. For example, if your income is to low and you have a family, even though you love them truly your not going to be able to take care of them. Although money cant buy love nor a family, it helps you manage your family in a way. Children like toys, and clothes etc. but they can live without it. If you don't have enough money for food; you'll not be able to survive. Thats why Locke says "Our incomes are like our shoes; if too small, they gall and pinch us."
Despite the fact that having a low income is a problem but having to much money is a problem too. For instance, a handful of the celebrities went from having nothing to having whatever they wish. As they start to make a lot off money, they completely start to change. Most people take advantage of it. You can easily loose your job etc. and you loos everything you have. The Great Depression is honestly the best example. Some people end up loosing there family from having a big income, they're life turns into a downhill without realizing it; and when they do it to late. This doesn't always happen but it does happen a lot. Thats why John Locke says 'but if too large, they cause us to stumble and to trip.."

All wealth is the product of labor. - John Locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote. I think this quote is really true about the economy system and social system. Labors, at the lowest level of society, the lowest level in political, make all the money for their nation. But the laborers don't own the wealth they create, the capitalist gets the money that is made by laborers.
I like this quote because this quote is still true right now. The products (money) that were made by the laborers will eventually turn into the capitalist's hands. Some disagrees that the laborers are not responsible for all the wealth. They need place and machine that were provided by the capitalists, but the land, place, machine were created by the laborers as well. The wealth to a country depends on those laborers.
"A nation may lose its liberties in a day and not miss them in a century" Baron de Montesquieu
ReplyDeleteI agree with the quote because what it is saying is that if a nation tries to conquer another nations territory and that nation doesn't do anything about it, they will lose almost everything. Also if a nation is conquer, they may lose their policies and they're tradition. A nation has to rebel but it won't always be successful because the other nation can be a little more advance than the other. if the nation fails there time will never be the same. Also the record of their history will fall to.
This quote is similar to what happened during the French and Indian war. Around the 1700 the French came to the Indian territory. The French wanted a piece of their land for ownership. The Indian's weren't going to give up their land without a fight. During the battle the Indian did kill some of the French most important leaders but had some what failed because the French still managed to take their land. The Indian old society had changed to a much more modern society compared to the Indians society.

"All mankind... being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty or possessions." John Locke
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote. No one should harm another in anyway. It will not only change who they are, but it'll make them insecure, shy, and you can put him or her in depression. A human life is really precious. We can change the world, and advance. Anyone can possibly change the world. The person you're about to harm might be the one who makes you rich in the next 10 years. Money is earned. Everyone earned their current financial state. Whether if you're rich or poor, you've done something in the past to have you end up with your career.
Hurting someone's health and liberty is also bad. Having freedom will help people come up with greater ideas, and goals. They're allowed to speak whatever they want to say. If you take away someone's liberty, they wont be able to change the world, even if its the slightest bit. Having a good health shows how happy a man can be. It brings out the their best smile and they have energy to continue in life.
