HW- Cecil Rhodes

Excerpt from "Confession of Faith" by Cecil Rhodes

It often strikes a man to inquire what is the chief good in life; to one the thought comes that it is a happy marriage, to another great wealth, and as each seizes on his idea, for that he more or less works for the rest of his existence. To myself thinking over the same question the wish came to render myself useful to my country. I then asked myself how could I and after reviewing the various methods I have felt that at the present day we are actually limiting our children and perhaps bringing into the world half the human beings we might owing to the lack of country for them to inhabit that if we had retained America there would at this moment be millions more of English living.

I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race. Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimens of human beings what an alteration there would be if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence, look again at the extra employment a new country added to our dominions gives. I contend that every acre added to our territory means in the future birth to some more of the English race who otherwise would not be brought into existence. Added to this the absorption of the greater portion of the world under our rule simply means the end of all wars, at this moment had we not lost America I believe we could have stopped the Russian-Turkish war by merely refusing money and supplies. Having these ideas, what scheme could we think of to forward this object ?

1. What is Cecil Rhodes confessing (hint: what does he want) ?

2. Will his ideas help or hurt the rest of the world ? Explain

Your answer to each question must be at least 1 paragraph (Total: 2 paragraphs).

  2. Cecil Rhodes confessed that he wanted everybody in this country to be happy with what they have. Like happy marriages and great wealth. He wants peace in America since the end of all the wars. He wanted to stop the Russian-Turkish wars by refusing money and supplies. He did not want any violence to happen.

His ideas will hurt the rest of the world because without supplies and money America would have lost the war and go on suffering. People will be really poor without additional help from money. America needs to fight for their country and not stay back and watch other countries destroy it.

    1) I think Cecil Rhodes is really confessing that he was an ardent believer in British colonialism. So I think he was a imperialist because he said "I contend that every acre added to our territory means in the future birth to some more of the English race who otherwise would not be brought into existence." He thinks if everything under their rule simple means the end of all wars, because England was the leader only in the world.
    2) I think his ideas hurt the rest of the world because Cecil Rhodes contend that England are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world they inhabit, the better ti is for the human race. But this is not true since there are many kind of human race, more stronger than British, more rich than British, and if he or his country seize, conquer other countries, the world cannot have a rest but have many wars.

  4. 1. He is probably confessing about having more amounts of lands for British, because by this way, there are more other races add into British which he thinks the best race in this world, so that more kinds of British races and the other counties' would not be bring into existence, furthermore in this situation, there will not be no more wars to this world.
    2. I think this will harm to rest of the world, because maybe a lot of countries will disagreed this thought, they maybe provoke the war between several countries against the Britain. In addition, maybe there will be discrimination between the different races, that also will cause the conflict.

  5. He expressed that the greater amount of the world was ruled by England. There would be no more wars, because England was the greatest country. And he thought you need to have more babies in all of their colonies so that the English population around the world increased. He wanted a happy marriaged as well. Every acre added to our territory means in the future birth to some more of the english race who otherwise would not be brought into existence. Greater portion of the world under our rule simpy means the end of all wars.
I believe that his ideas will help the rest of the world because England will stop going war with other countries. The England was the greatest country so without them, the other countries can live better. The other countries will have better land and not getting destroyed because of the war. They can make more babies and the wealthy will have more land.

  6. 1. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he wants imperialism, or have England extend its power over other countries and use their territory and resources for their own use. Although he supported moral belief at first, he thought it over several times to convince himself that if they are the "finest race in the world". He explains that with high superiority, believing that if they (the Anglo Saxon race) take control of all the countries and the world, it would be better for the human race. He gives disappointment about their loss of America from the Revolutionary War, and explains that if they retained America, they would have million more English people living in their country.

    2. Rhodes ideas will hurt the rest of the world because it supports discrimination and race supremacy. The ideas aren't right and it's impossible to take control over the entire world. As socialism was presented, this idea was impossible, and it would lead to disaster with the other countries if it were attempted this way. Rhodes did have good intentions for England, but to think nothing of the other races isn't right. How he may have formed these ideas may be because of their superiority over Africa and their advancement with the Industrial Revolution, but these factors do not heighten the chance.

Cecil Rhodes wants people to be just like the British . He believes that they are the finest species of man .Cecil thinks that if Britain controls the world then they would not allow any wars . Cecil believes that only the British should control the world because of there control over most of the world already Cecil wants other countries to follow British rule.
Cecil Rhodes thinks that he helping the world but that's only in his mind . He thinks Britain will end all wars but I don't think he realizes that Britain didn't get all there land by being nice to the natives they used brut force to get what they wanted from the native people.

  8. Cecil Rhodes was a British business man who made money off of gold and diamond mining. He wanted to stop the Russian Turkish war. He felt that this could have been accomplished by refusing money and supplies. Rhodes claims that under the British rule there would be an end to all wars. This would lead to “millions more of English living”. He was very ethnocentric by believing his race was superior then all others.
I believe that his ideas would hurt the rest of the world because nobody wants war though they should still always be prepared for one with a strong military. Also with ethnocentric people, Rhodes would most likely want his religion to spread and this could lead to war as well. Also he would want and increase of population of his own kind. Therefore I believe that Rhodes ideas would not be beneficial to the rest of the world.

  9. Cecil Rhodes believed that he was of the finest race in the world and that the mroe of the world they inhabit the better it would be for the human race. He thought that everyone should be under the Anglo-Saxon influenc.
His ideas will hurt the rest of the world. His ideas will ruin the rest of the world for many reasons. For an example, if everyone was under the Anglo-Saxen influence then there would be no diversity and the world would be like a utopia. This would make the world boring and uninteresting.

  10. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that most of the world was ruled by England and that there would be no more wars and calling England the greatest country in the world and also that they needed to have more babies in all their colonies that England had so that their population around the world would increase.

Cecil Rhodes was more in favor for British Imperialism and even saying that he wanted the U.S to rejoin the British Empire. His beliefs in the advantages were reflected in the attitudes in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Netherlands and any other country in the world that held overseas possessions.

  11. 1.Cecil Rhodes confesses that he wants to imperialize the world in hope to populate the English race; "the finest race in the world." Mr.Rhodes ideas are too far fetch, and contains many faults. A world under rule of Britain doesn't lead to a war-free environment, instead it provides a reason for patriotic countries to attack Britain. He believes that if Britain were to go under imperialism and control various countries the world will be more peaceful and developed. He constructs the idea of populating British blood.
2.These ideas will do nothing more than harm the world. Countries that are going to be affected by British rule will surely make an effort to fight. These wars will result in debt, resentment and casualties. If British were to successfully imperialize these countries the liberties that the county and societies have established are worthless, the British will ultimately force citizens to stop populating and to convert to Anglo-Saxon.

  12. In Cecil Rhode’s confession of faith, he is confessing that he wants England to follow imperialism and conquer different lands. I think in his mind, imperialism was the only way England could better itself, both politically and economically. He also says that the British people are the finest race and deserve all the good things in life. He thinks that if the British basically do conquer the world, everyone would live a better existence. He also brought up the fact that if America did not beat England, they could have stopped the Russian-Turkish war.
Cecil Rhodes’s ideas would hurt the rest of the world. The way he was talking made him sound as if England was holy and everyone who wasn’t from England didn’t deserve any of the good things in life. He was talking as if he was going to dictate the universe if he was still alive, which is ignorant and selfish in the worst ways. There would be no positive outcomes if his ideas would have been put in place. Imperialism, the way he talked about made it sound selfish to the rest of the world and not positive at all.

  13. Cecil Rhodes was confessing to wanting the human race to expand. By expand, he meant it by inhabiting more parts of the Earth. Rhodes wanted more people knowing about the English way of living by increasing the amount of territory they have. He also said that with new countries added to their empire, that would mean more jobs available. Rhodes also believed that by conquering or absorbing a greater portion of the world, that would mean that all wars would end.

In my opinion, I believe that his ideas would hurt the rest of the world. The reason for that is because it is almost impossible to handle such a large empire. With a large empire, that means that you have to have different people ruling them which also means that you won't have as much contact with them. This could cause a revolution which could spread throughout the empire that would cause one to be overthrown by their citizens. This is why I believe Cecil Rhodes ideas would hurt the rest of the world

    1) Cecil Rhodes believes that the British has the finest race in the world so he wanted more territories add on to his country, therefore the human race to this world would become better. He think if the British owns more land, then there will be less war happens. He believes that they could have stopped the Russian-Turkish war by merely refusing money and supplies.
    2) I think his ideas will hurt the rest of the world because first, he shouldn't think that British has the finest race through out the world. Having more territories will not help having a better race for the world. There will be more war happening if British decided to take over more lands. He will not help his country by having these ideas.

  15. 1) Cecil Rhodes is confessing his desire to conquer countries, and to inhabit as much as the world that he can. He thinks that by being in control of more countries it can be beneficiary to your country. He also thinks that the more they own, the more English men will be brought to life which he seems fond of because he also states that if they took over America here would be "millions more of English living".
2)I think his ideas would hurt the rest of the world, because everyone will be trying to conquer each other, which leads to a lot more war. Countries would be turning against other countries, a lot less peace, more enemies than alliances. I also think he would only treat white people good and treat colored people as slaves, so if he were to take over poor countries they would be treated worse.

  16. Ceil Rhodes wants the population to increase. In other words, more childbirth.Since we are the “finest race in the world”, the most the earth that we inhabit, the better for us. He also wants most of the world to be part of the english empire. That way there would be less wars.

I think that his ideas would be negative. The earth has a carrying capacity as well, having too many humans on the earth can bring many tragedies. Hunger all around the earth, not enough medication, not enough money, not enough resources to keep the human population satisfied. I think that his idea of having most of the world be part of the english empire is wrong. There are too many different races, different traditions for all of the world to be part of the english empire.

  17. 1.In Cecil Rhodes confessing he referred that, the race white is superior then the other race and the Europeans are the savior of other nation, brought them hope and “soap"(lol, it's Enlightenment) by dominating over the other nation and rule them and believe it's to strength them and to save them from darkness.
2.The idea is going to harm the rest of the world by keeping pressure on the other non western nation, preventing them from social and economical developments, and might cause many rebellious wars toward the sense of racism and poorly treatment of the people who are under their control, and their will be hard for the being controlled nation to start building a strong and healthy nation.

  18. 1. Rhodes is basically saying that many people have a different mission in life. To him his mission is to make England a world power. He wants to make every country in the world under England’s control. He believes not only will England be better off but it would benefit the other countries as well. In summary his goal is to have England control the world.

    2. Rhodes says his ideas will stop wars from occurring. However I believe this is the total opposite of what will actually occur. First of all he has to some how take over this territories they wont be able to do that without force. And even if they do somehow take over these territories the people living there will most likely rebel against England’s rule therefore causing more violence. So it will probably hurt the rest of the world.

  19. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he believes that the British are the best. He desires cultural domination. He thinks that Great Britain should be an imperialistic country. He believes that the way he can be useful to his country is to try to get more land. Cecil Rhodes wants to get more land so there would be more people. He thinks that Britain owes more British people to the world because it was believed by many that the British were the best race in the world. Supposedly, if the non-British people in other countries were ‘brought under the Anglo-Saxon influence’ they would just increase the amount of power that the British had. Also, he believed that if Britain colonized the entire world, there would be no wars. His view was somewhat like a socialist view. He thought that British rule was akin to a utopian society.
Cecil Rhodes’ ideas would hurt the rest of the world because there is no country whose rulers haven’t been rebelled against. No one wants to be controlled and one of Cecil Rhodes’ major ideas was that if the British colonized the entire world, they would make everyone else like them. Many people believe that their country is the best but Cecil Rhodes took the nationalistic approach to the extreme by saying, ‘… the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race.’ He wasn’t in any way attempting to hide the way he felt about it and if he got what he wished (for the world to be only inhabited by the British and people just like them), the world would be in chaos.

  20. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that a most of the people in the world are controlled by England. Since England is going to be the best country, there aren't going to be any more wars. Therefore they will have more newborn and the England's population will increase around the world.

I think his ideas hurt the rest of the world because if the population increases then it can lead overpopulation then leads to lack of natural resources for them. For example,it would lead to more disease or death, because of not enough water or food then which can cause starvation and dehydration. Also when one country starts to take over the world it is too much for it to control.

Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he wants to inhabit more of the world to make it better for the people. He believes that there would have been more people living if it weren't for the lack of the country. For example, the wars were one of the causes that he believed resulted the lost of America. In addition, he wants a better society for the people and let more English people live. Cecil Rhodes was trying to benefit the country.
In my opinion, I think his ideas will help the rest of the world. I believe this because it could end and reduce the many deaths of innocent people. In the text, he wrote "Added to this the absorption of the greater portion of the world under our rule simply means the end of all wars..." This quote from the text supports my opinion because I think that his ideas for ending war could bring peace and less fights. As a result, some changes could have arisen and changed the world.

  23. 1. Rhodes confessed to racism. By that, I meant racism is expressed when he says, "I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inahbit the better it is for the human race." Belief in imperialism is also expressed in the document when Rhodes says, "The world under our rule simply means the end of all wars" Here Rhodes does not take into account the fact that some countries might not agree with British views. Some nations might disagree so strongly that the rebel against the British, but being British and having the belief that all the land is made for the British, Rhodes does not realize this. During this time, the Britsh believed that they had completely supremacy for the pure reason that they are white.
    2. His ideas would hurt the rest of the world instead of helping, because he simply believes that his race is superior to all. By relying on such beliefs, it shows that himself and his ideas are very close-minded and arrogant. The racist and imperialistic feelings displayed in "Confession of Faith" by Cecil Rhodes are spot-on as to how the British viewed other nations. He is basically saying that all races besides the Anlo-Saxon or English race, are completely worthless and uncivilized. Ultimately, these ideas would definitely not help the rest of the world.

  24. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he wants more of the world. He believes if he can take control the whole world everyone would be happy. He wants everyone to be British. He thinks that British people are the finest race in the world.
I think Cecil Rhode's idea can be both benefit and hurt the world. It can benefit the world because he wants peace and there will be less wars. But not everyone can be British and there will be always unhappiness in the world. Cecil Rhode is thinking about the impossible. He was good of him to think about peace and everyone to be happy but that is impossible to make everyone British.
