HW- A New Industrial Revolution?

A New Industrial Revolution?

The Biological Age

While the electro-mechanical age may have caused the problem, it could also help us find the solution. Technological development has enabled us to mimic nature’s processes. Now all that is lacking is a collective change in consciousness to take us into a Biological Age, one where materials can repair themselves and where by-products are no longer waste but fuel for other systems. We are going to live through this epoch change whether we choose to or not. Failure to adjust our thinking, and with it our behaviors, will force the earth to exercise its self-correcting mechanisms over us. Necessity, as the old adage goes, is the mother of invention. Only one question remains: what part do we want to play?

1. Which invention do you think is the most useful? Explain
2. Will these inventions ever make it to most people's homes? Explain why or why not

Each answer must be at least 1 paragraph (Total: 2 paragraphs)

  1. The invention that is the most useful is the larder because it helps to make foods and fruits fresh without having the bacteria in it which is not good for our bodies. It consists of an evaporative cooler vegetable storage system built in the dining room. This will be great for homes and it could be expensive. It is better to have the larder than having a refrigerator with dead food.

These inventions will make it to people's homes because they are really important and they can make a better living for us. It might take time because it is a long process into making these inventions. These inventions look like they can take a lot of space so it will most likely be made in home than in an apartment. These inventions make doing things for yourself easier.

  2. The Microbial Home is most useful because as it says in the reading The Microbial Home is viewed as a cyclical biological machine where wastes like sewage, effluent, garbage, wastewater are filtered, processed and recycled to be used as inputs for the various home functions.
The gas from the methane digester is fed to a cooking range and gas mantle lights.
Water pipes are preheated by the digester and channeled to other components.
The digester needs a constant supply of waste material and water.
The dehydrated sludge residue from the digester can be safely removed and used as compost.yes these inventions will because they are organized easy to use u can do every thing at the right time etc.

  3. 1. I believe the Paternoster Plastic Waste Up-cycler is the most useful invention out of all of them. It takes care of plastic and other waste by decomposing and metabolizing it and gets rid of it after several weeks. Today, we dump plastic in landfills that occupy the land negatively, where they slowly decompose after many years. If this invention were to be put to use, a lot of our garbage would lessen and help the environment.

    2. These inventions may not make it to people's homes, at least, not now. Despite it's good use for the environment, these inventions would most likely cost a lot for its complexity and design. Some examples are solar panels, electric cars, and other products most common people won't be able to buy. It is not entirely impossible to get them however in the future. If the economy improves, people will be able to accept these inventions in their homes and help the environment.

  4. 1. According to my opinion, I think the Bio Digester Island is the most useful thing. Because it can recycle a lot of things, like garbage, and use the energy from recycling to the other function in our home. Recycle energy is the most important and popular thing in our life now, we should use energy carefully because the resources in our earth become less and less. Because of that this machine can be very useful in out life time now, that's why I think it's the most important invention.
2.I think it won't, because in my mind, these machine will cost a lot of money, some family can't afford it.
Also, some family, like old people, they may not used to use these machine.

I think the bio-light is the most useful out of them because you don't really need to do anything for it to make the light. The light uses bacteria to make a soft green light, also the others looked a little to complicated and they looked like they took up a lot of space. The other machines would take a lot time that most people today don't really have.

Honestly I don't think that they would be in most peoples homes because today people don't have the time to be worrying about if these machines are going to work or not. The people of today are more focused on there jobs and kids than having to keep maintaining these machines.

  6. The invention that I think is the most useful was the telegraph. The telegraph is the most most useful because it helps people to communicate more efficiently. Before telegraphs, people used a horse for transporting messages. What was riding the horse was a man who was carrying a numerous amount of messages. This was known as the Pony Express, and it was obsolete later on by telegraphs that enhanced the transport of messages.

he telegraph was later on used military wised during 1812, when the Americans fought for their revolution against Britain. The telegraph sent dots that the Americans could read, which were usually from soldiers sent to the president. The telegraphs were then later sent to the public, so everyone can use it, but for support of the economy people had to pay tax for it. The inventor of the telegraph Pavel Schilling, he was a German man in America. Bu the person who invented the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell and which supported the telegraph.

  7. 1. Which invention do you think is the most useful? Explain

I think that the bio-light would be the useful. I believe that it would the most useful because it is a great way to conserve energy. Bio-light uses different biological technologies to create ambient light effects. Alternatively the cellular light array can be filled with fluorescent proteins that emit different frequencies of light. It is great alternative to a regular florescent light bulb.

    2. Will these inventions ever make it to most people's homes? Explain why or why not
I think that the concept of the Microbial Home is a very good idea but I don’t think any of the concepts will ever be placed in people’s homes . The concepts are good ideas but they are not practical. The average everyday family would have no use for an invention like the Apothecary, and though it sounds like this home would be saving people money I can’t even imagine how much it would take to upgrade a home to the the standers of the Microbial Home.

  8. None of the inventions that were made seemed useful to me. It’s just a way of making people fatter and they will become lazier. The need for things being done manually no longer would be needed. Everything will be automated. People with jobs such as plumbers, electricians, and contractors will start to lose customers. I think that none of it is really necessary unless you want to live a boring life. The whole thought of “technological development elimination natures processes” sounds like some fantasy. The “Biological age” sounds unbalanced and makes no sense.

I wouldn’t think that these inventions would make it to anyone’s homes because it sounds like a waste of time and money. People who are senseless with carefree money might invest in buying one. The inventions look very convincing but I can’t imagine someone who would by such dull, lifeless, and meager objects. Inventions like these look like they would brake easily and look too simple and ridiculous.

  9. The inventions on the website were all very useful. However, the invention that I liked the best was the beehive. I liked it because it was interesting to look at, and can help us see how bees make their honey. It would be enriching to be able to understand how these industrial creatures make something that many of us eat everyday. This can also teach kids how bees make their honey.

The inventions on the website were wonderful. However, I do not believe that any of them will make to it people’s home. All of the inventions are probably very expensive. People these days may not have the money to afford the inventions. Also, the inventions are all large, it may be inconvenient for people’s homes.

  10. 1. The invention that is most useful would be the Larder. This unique invention is not only a dinning table but, it can preserve and grow food. The table itself is made of reclaimed wood and is supported by an iron structure. At the center of the larder, the compartment is used to stored various foods and different temperatures. This technique preserves food longer than refrigeration by using natural processes. Above the table, there is also a ceramic garden where vegetables can be grown. This invention would be useful for everyone because food can be easily stored and used when needed to. In modern day, most people are shifting to a healthier lifestyle and want to keep food as fresh as possible and maybe even grow their own products, which the larder is made to do.
    2. I believe that these inventions will make it to most people’s homes. Inventions such as the Bio Digester Island, Larder, and Urban Beehive might the common inventions that would be found in homes because they are useful and have a nice look to them. Though they seem to take up a larger amount of space, they add a very modern feature to the home. The problem with the inventions might be the price. New and advanced products always have a high price that majority of people cannot pay. However, as we maneuver into the Biological Age almost all products will have a similar design and purpose.

  11. In my opinion, I believe the Filtering Squatting Toilet is the most useful invention. The reason for that is because of it's ability to reuse human excretion. When you use this toilet, your excretion goes into a methane digester which is located in the kitchen island. It converts human waste into usable energy which can be then used for your stove or for lighting.

These inventions probably won't make it into most people's homes. The reason for that is because of its inconvenience. Even though this is the "new" way of living and how all these things can help reduce pollution, but some people might not see it that way. Some might see these inventions as weird, dangerous, or even scary. For example, the Urban Beehive may seem cool but some might be scared off by the bees and how they may escape. Also, the Filtering Squatting Toilet may have some people think it's unsanitary. You squat onto a toilet in the ground and you excrete your waste, then your waste gets digested and then it's made into usable energy that can power your items at home which can be weird. You will probably be confused by where your waste goes to. One last reason is because it's strange. Most people prefer a modern way of life, they won't want something different, they would want to live the same way they have been living and use the same thing they've been using. They wouldn't want to spend all that money on something that they already have.

  12. 1) I think the urban beehive would be really useful to me and I really like the concept of it. Since I'm allergic to syrup, I substitute honey for it frequently. I also prefer tea over coffee, and use honey in it to make it sweeter. I really like the idea of having a beehive at home that guarantees fresh honey and allows you to see how honey is made and how these bees work. A lot of the time, if you want to examine bees produce honey you have to wear these big protective suits and you have to be really careful, but with this you can watch it in the comfort of your very own house. I think that's so fascinating!
    2) As much as I love these inventions, and would like them for my own home, I highly doubt they will make it to most peoples homes. I don't think enough people understand how these would help our environment, so they wouldn't be moved to actually invest to get it for themselves. I also think that a lot of people who are wealthy would rather buy stylish furniture that eco friendly furniture. I think only people who have the money and really appreciate the fact that you help the environment and help yourself by recycling wastes to give off energy for other functions in the house. I really hope these inventions will make it to a lot of home, but knowing how selfish and wrapped up in trends people are I don't think it will.

  13. The most useful invention out of all these things would be Apothecary, because it can help monitor your health to see if there is an early warning for a disease and the ways that you can help prevent it and it can also help see your conditions of your skin, eyes and retina and checking your breath to see if there is any type of disease inside your mouth like gum disease, tooth decay and use of drugs or alcohol to see if you can avoid these things later on.

These inventions will make it to people’s homes in the future, because we are currently see technology grow more and more every day, we can see new things in our lives, but I believe that one day we see these inventions being useful in our house in the next 10-15 years and then people will see how these inventions will become very useful in our daily lives.

  14. The invention that I think would be the most useful is the larder. When people eat food, especially in this century, always wonder if it's fresh or not. Fresh food is healthy for the body and keeps your body from getting any sicknesses such as stomach aches. If the larder invention came to life, anyone would have fresh fruit, vegetables, or food in the comfort of your own home. Fresh good is pricey nowadays, so if the larder was real. it would be less expensive.
None of these inventions would ever make it to most people's homes because it's not possible for any of these inventions to be distributed to people's homes. The price of these inventions, if even made, would be pricey and in a way, unrealistic. Most of these inventions are unsanitary in their own way and would be disturbing to have in households. It is true that these inventions will benefit the Earth, but it would most likely not benefit us. If anything it would just take up space and time.

  15. In my opinion, i think the most useful invention is the Apothecary. I think the apothecary is the most useful invention because it specializes in the body and analyzes any diease and etc. Also , if you do have any diesase, such as gum disease, or tooth decay, you can treat it since it lets you know previously. In the text, it indicates, "Analytical functions are designed into the bathroom, where cutting-edge technology analyzes your body constantly and non-invasively, looking for trends in your health, symptoms of wellness and disease, giving advice and warnings where necessary. Sensors behind the bathroom mirror that observe the condition of your skin, eyes and retina. Breath falling on the mirror is analyzed for chemicals than indicate tooth decay, dietary problems, alcohol and drug misuse." This invention would be very significant and helpful because it will provide suggestions about diseases in your body just like your doctor would. It can prevent infections that are contagious as well.
I believe that these inventions will make it to most people's homes and become very successful. I think this because it will help an individual be more healthier and beneficial. These inventions, for exaple like the Apothecary, would be almost like replacing a doctor's job and it will benefit many people. People qould depend on these inventions that most likely be more quicker and advanced. In addtion, these inventions may also conserve more energy and make a bigger impact.

  17. HW- A New Industrial Revolution?

    1. Which invention do you think is the most useful? Explain

Which invention i think is the most useful is the urban beehive. Bee are most the interesting species and we should take a more close look. Harvesting honey from is a better than a mass production beehive. After all healthy clean and useful since the bees is a dieing species. Fresh off the line and i said more pancakes and wafflers.

    2. Will these inventions ever make it to most people's homes? Explain why or why not

These inventions will may or not make into people's homes. But mostly yes it mostly depends on which products. Microbial home itself will either sell as whole not as much. Parts of it will sell like Bio light which why it sell because of its a light. Beehive is a no because people would its crazy to keep bees near to your home.

  18. The most useful invention is the larder which is a system designed to keep “living foods” fresh. The benefit of this is that is uses natural processes. This system is built into the dining table which is convenient. It has an evaporative cooler inside. It also has a vegetable storage system. Above the table is a ceramic garden. Vegetables groups can be grown and stored there. It is also predicted that later in the future, there will be a much greater proportion of local and home grown food.
I believe that all of these inventions will make it to people’s homes because our society and the world is getting more advanced and technological by the minute. The reason for this is that everyone wants their lives to be easier and these inventions claim to do so. Also the theme of these inventions seems to be saying back to the basics. They all use things that are better for the environment and multi functional. I would not be surprised to see this devices being used in everyday life in the next couple of years.

  19. 1. I think that the Paternoster Plastic Waste Up-cycler is the most useful invention. I think that it's the most useful because utilizes the properties of fungi that can decompose the plastics. As of today, recycling plastics and paper is still a big issue. By putting this invention to use, decomposing plastic can't get any simpler. In addition, when the contents are exposed to daylight and air, it allows the mycelium which is attatched to the plastic, to sprout mushroom fruit. So not only does it decompose plastic efficiently, it also produces edible mushroom fruit.
    2. I think that most of these inventions won't ever make it into people's homes because the change is too drastic. Many people try to avoid change as much as possible. Moreover, how much will the consumers have to pay for these new inventions? As you can imagine, these inventions will probably not be very cheap. Although these inventions are very eco-friendly have great concepts, people will find it hard accepting the change.

  20. I belive the Larder is the most useful invention for the future for its many uses such as its design to keep ‘living food’ fresh, by using natural processes (as opposed to dead food in the refrigerator)..
This device consists of an evaporative cooler and vegetable storage system built into a dining table. With the resources for running a refrigerator going low, people will like this idea, because it keeps food fresher without the impact to the environment.

I believe the least popular invention will be the Urban Beehive, the demand for honey I believe is not that great and also it is the only food that does not spoil which means you ca have it indefinitely.

  21. The invention that would probably be useful in everyday life would be the bio-light. The reason why I believe this is because we are always looking for alternative energy sources. And it potentially can reduce amount of coal burned to produce energy. Also in can possibly be a cheaper option for lighting in the long run. So it will defiantly attract the average consumer. (For the right price.) But I can see this product being used universally within the next 5 to 10 yrs.

When the question is asked “ will this invention make it into homes” to me it honestly depends on the invention. There are many factors to consider when answer this question. First of all is something like this widely needed? Also you have factor in whether or not idea is really realistic and how many people would actually be interested in it. The to I can actually see happening is the bio-light and the Paternoster Plastic Waste Up-cycler. This is because they respond to a huge problem in our world today, which is global warming. The bio-light will probably be just a consumer product while the Paternoster Plastic Waste Up-cycler would be more commercial use. The other inventions just don’t seem very practical to me.

  22. 1. I think the Apothecary is the most useful. Apothecary can save lives. Its purpose is to keep us healthy and the prevention of disease. You don't always need to go to the doctor. If you have this equipment in our home it will tell you if you are healthy.
    2. Yes these inventions will make it to most people's homes. Around the mid to late 1900's most television was invented. Barely anyone has a television in their homes. To watch television you have to pay to watch a channel but as time goes buy television has gotten better. Now almost everyone have a television in their home. Eventually these invention will be in our homes.

  23. 1.For my personal option I belief the first design the“ bio digester island" is a pretty creative design, not just because the creative design of this invention but also the Idea behind of this creation, by using this design, we could save many of the energy source(eh....money too) and shut down many generator and save the environment by burring less coal and natural gas, because they are the mean source of global warming and mean source of energy.
2.what I belief by these inventions, they are great but people are more adapted to the old way of living by using electricity generated by the generator, and relies on coal and many nonrenewable source of energy. What I wants to express here is that most of these designs will make into people's home in the future, and for now people will not adopt this new ways of living,(Example. when telephone and refrigerator first invented people could not suddenly adopt the new ways of living so these inventions did not made to the home of many, but look at us now, we got cellphones, refrigerator, they appear almost in every house)

  24. The invention that i think will be the most useful is the filtering squatting toilet. It will probably be the most useful invention because it uses excretion from our body and delivers it to a methane digester. The methane digester will then use the body's waste to create energy for different parts of the house. The filtering squatting toilet also filters the excretion which is almost like recycling. This will help in not polluting oceans, lakes and other parts of our world.
I believe that yes some of these inventions will make it to some peoples homes but at the same time some wont make it to peoples homes. Yes because some people will love the idea of theses inventions because they are mostly to help the world and its pollution. And these inventions will lower their bills they have to pay for electricity, gas etc.. But some people wont like these inventions because some people may believe that using people excretion to power your house or filtering it will be dirty. It will also put out of business some mayor companies. And they wont like that.

    1. I think that the most useful is the Apothecary is most useful, because it prevents disease. It also show things that you can't see like for example when you take a shower it can reveal what kind of condition you have on your skin. It also shows if you have any tooth decay, gum disease and others. It also analyses your body if your healthy. Also can check have any disease, can give advice and warnings.

    2. I think people will have it at their homes because people want to see what's going on in their body to see if they have any disease. Also to see if their skin is healthy. Also people will want it because it can give them advice instead of going to the doctor. Also it can help to see if your teeth are healthy to see if you have any tooth decay or gum disease.

1)I think the most useful invention is the bio digester island. I really like this invention because it can convert kitchen and bathroom garbages into usable methane gas that can power series functions at home. Since that we know that right now the earth is losing many natural sources, reuse energy is important. The bio digester island can reduces kitchen/bathroom garbages and increase the reuse of energy.
    2) Right now, in my own opinion, these inventions will not make it to most people's home. A major reason is the price for these new inventions, any type of a new technology is expensive because the scientists who designed these inventions payed their money, time and moxie. Another reason is because some inventions are not really useful for our life, for example, the urban beehive. No one will really going to buy a urban beehive, it is fun but it's not useful. At some point it is dangerous, and a waste of money.

  27. I believe the Apothecary is the most useful invention. This invention is used for home-centered health monitoring and diagnosis. It lets you know on early-warning and prevention of disease. Being aware of a certain disease that you might be dealing with is very important and useful. There are sensors behind the bathroom mirror that observe the condition of your skin, eyes and retina.
I don't believe many peoples homes would have these inventions. Due to the fact that these inventions are high tech, they are probably very expensive. These inventions would help a lot of people out in their everyday life doings. It would also increase their body health. Since everything is organic it will all be on the expensive side which will largely reduce the percent of people buying it.

  28. I think that paternoster is the most useful invention because you can just recycle from there. Lot of business people can use it. When they have to throw out paper work garbage that they messed up, they could just put it inside the invention. They can put plastic waste too. When your done with drinking water bottle, you can just put it inside.
I believe that these inventions might make it to most peoples homes because they might be useful to people. These invention could be useful to different types of people. Just like paternoster, some people might not need it but some do. Not everyone might recycle. Some inventions could be really expensive.

  29. I feel that the invention, “Larder” is a very useful invention despite the fact that all the inventions shown on the website were all equally useful. This is because most foods are thrown out daily in our everyday lives and we don’t and can’t do anything about it. This invention provides the system of keeping food fresh by using natural processes instead of a refrigerator that allows food the go dead or bad eventually over time. Its powers are all built into one dining table that can be accessible when eating with a family for easy access and freshly taken vegetable and other foods.

This invention could probably be put into our everyday lives and may be able to make it into our homes because it’s so useful. Why should we miss the opportunity to live a better organic life when we’re living in absolute waste when we’re constantly throwing out the foods that could’ve stayed alive if we owned one of these products? Not only is it natural, it’s very space friendly because its designed in a dining table that can be easily used as a ‘refrigerator’ and a table made to enjoy a meal using organic foods with the family. It's extremely useful to our everyday lives.

  30. I think that the Larder is most useful invention. I think this because it's a safe, creative and helpful way of saving your food. What I mean by saving is keeping food fresh such as vegetables and fruits. This invention is designed to keep different types of food stay fresh at different optimal temperatures. The fridge does the opposite, it stays the same temperature and food can become spoiled in about a week.
I do believe that this invention will make it to people's homes. I think this because people always try to find out a way to save money, and this invention will probably be the most helpful in saving money for food. Hundreds of dollars are spent on groceries every month, especially for big families. But most of this food goes to waste because it becomes spoiled quickly, and throwing out food is a huge waste of money. This invention can definitely be a positive thing for families, food will always stay fresh.

  31. 1. Which invention do you think is the most useful? Explain
I think the Apothecary invention will be the most useful because its very easy to use and helpful. Its like
a mirror that analyzes your body. It detects any symptoms or diseases. The sensors behind the mirror
observe the condition of your skin or eyes. Its a very easy and simple invention that can be used as like a doctor check up.
    2. Will these inventions ever make it to most people's homes? Explain why or why not
Some inventions might possibly make it to most people's homes like the Larder. The Larder is like a
refrigerator that's easy to use. Maybe even the Apothecary because its like a mirror but it can check for
any conditions. However, an invention like the Urban Beehive would probably not make it to most people's homes because who would want bees in their homes. Most people don't like bees.

  32. I think the most useful invention in the set of Microbial Home inventions is the BioLight. It is using already naturally existing organisms and materials found in abundance on Earth, and turning them into a naturally generated light. It is turning in human byproducts, I.E, Methane, Wastes, Etc, into a clean, and renewable source of energy. It could also alternatively be powered by something such as plant cells, which would go through the process of photosynthesis to produce energy and light. It is also connected to a main hub and system, making it perfect for the process of updating our current technologies into one giant command center.

Sadly to say, these inventions will most likely never make it to a majority of people's homes. The costs to have it installed, and operate on it, must be astronomical. Further more, as with any new technology, it may take many generations before the general public is, shall we say, okay, with it being a part of every day life. Furthermore, the entire concept might seem terribly inconvenient for many modern day people, as well as inefficient for our current needs. Perhaps, given the right circumstances, it could eventually become the normal means of electronic efficiency. But, for now, it remains to be seen that it will be. -K.B.

  33. 1) There are many useful inventions. The one that is most useful to me is the Mobile Home. The Microbial Home is viewed as a cyclical biological machine where wastes like sewage, effluent, garbage, wastewater are filtered, processed and recycled to be used as inputs for the various home functions. It contains a garbage disposal attached to the cutting board. it also has a beehive that drips honey.
    2) No, this invention wont be able to make it to a lot of peoples homes. I think this because the invention looks like it will cost a lot of money. The majority of the population is poor. Therefore many people will not be able to afford to put something like the Mobile Home in their homes.

  34. I think the refrigerator is the most useful invention so far. Not to sound crazy, but it has caused more help than damage. If people are not aware, there are liquids contained the refrigerator that is hazardous and can harm the environment and your being. But it has helped people store food and survive. Without the refrigerator and there was a shortage of food in a market, then you can't savior the food you have for future uses.
I think it made it to just about every modern home, it is somewhat cheap, affordable and obtainable. It has become somewhat of a requirement to have in a home because of what it can do. We can store food for a few weeks before it goes bad or spoiled. It could save us from going to the market everyday to get food, so it would be saving us time and gas if we had to go to the grocery store everyday for food because we can't store it in our homes. Also if such an event like hurricane sandy occurs, we could stack on up on food just in case our supermarkets dont have any shipment of food to sell.
